As per a WHO study, 36% Indians are inflicted by depression. This makes us the most depressed country in the world. So, if you are a family of three, chances are one of you is depressed. And yet, it isn't spoken about around dinner tables.
Depression, because it isn't perceptible, is considered a figment of the imagination. A disease which those around the sufferer can rarely understand. The worst thing you can tell a depressed person is: "Don't worry, it'll get okay. It's nothing." Of course, saying, "stop doing drama all the time," is downright cruel.
Depression is a serious illness, and it needs medical care. Perhaps, now that Deepika Padukone, with all her success and star studded life, has come out in the open about how brutally affected she was by depression, will the disease gain mainstream currency. Now, perhaps, we will start looking at the symtoms with a more benevolent eye.
If you've not heard Deepika talk on NDTV, then here is a snippet. The lady deserves our salute to do this at the peak of her career.
